When it comes to buying a table saw there is not much that you need to know.

A standard table saw comes with a saw blade, a ripping fence, a safety guard, a miter gauge, a blade height adjustment wheel, a blade 0 to 45 degree angle tilt wheel,

a stand, a motor and a table top. A 10 inch table saw refers to the diameter of

the saw blade not the size of the table. 10 inch table saws are the most common.

Your main concern should be the size of the table top, the weight of the saw, the motor and what type of projects you plan on using the table saw for.

A large table top gives you more stability when cutting large pieces of wood such as a

four foot by four foot sheet of plywood or paneling. Some table tops may look small but have slide out extenders to give you more table space.

If you plan on doing indoor and outdoor projects you should consider the weight of the table saw. A lot of people have their workshop in their basement or garage. If you have an outdoor wood cutting project you might want to bring the table saw outside to make working on the project easier instead of running downstairs to your work shop to cut

wood. Portable table saws with wheels are available. However a small 85 pound table saw is not too hard to take upstairs if necessary.

The motor that comes with the table saw should be powerful enough for your wood cutting. There are two types of motors that are used on table saws. Direct drive and belt driven. A direct drive motor receives more stress than a belt driven motor. Some people

claim a direct drive motor does not last as long as a belt driven motor. In my experience,

I have never had a direct drive motor burn out on me, but I have had two or three belt driven motors burn out on me. Overall unless you have an issue with motors, I would not worry whether it is direct drive or belt driven.

Home Improvement Boom Suggests America Is Getting Handier Around the House : Doing It Yourself
Sure, you might have put a decent Soap Box Derby racer together when you were 10, and your dad thought that ashtray you made in shop class was pretty great, even if he didn't smoke, and that birdhouse you built might still be holding up if the cat hadn't pounced on it. Yeah, you know how to drive a nail all right.But replace a garbage disposal? Paper a wall? Lay kitchen tile? Install a door?Ideas like that give you the shakes.Or at least they used to. Because, if the proliferation of hardware supermarkets and mega-home design centers is any yardstick, America is becoming a lot handier these days.More and more, people who used to call in a professional to oil a squeaky hinge are adding the nomenclature of sandpaper grit, socket wrenches, saw teeth, screw threads, nail size--even the specialized descriptions of pipe fittings--to their daily vocabulary.It's no accident that the most popular program on PBS has been "This Old House." The motivation, said Bill Pena, the senior vice-president and general merchandising manager of the Fullerton-based Home Club, is love and money."I think there are a lot of people who love to work with their hands as well as a lot of other people who are conscious of the dollar," he said. "There's more awareness of do-it-yourself than there's ever been. Especially in times like these, when people are concerned about the economy, that (the) family who's thinking about buying a home may decide, instead of buying a new home, to fix up or add to their current home, maybe replace cabinets, upgrade the bath area and its fixtures, put in new toilets and faucets."Also, said Pena, manufacturers and retailers of hardware and building materials are trying to demystify the process of do-it-yourself home improvement and repair."Probably the primary reason people are doing more on their own today," he said, "is that there are new products that continue to come out on the market and the manufacturers are coming up with good packaging, good point-of-purchase material. So a lot of people who would have hesitated in the past are starting to think that certain jobs aren't so big anymore, that they're able to do it. Before, they may never have tackled putting in a garbage disposal or putting up kitchen cabinets. Now they will."And they have lots of help available to them.Small libraries of do-it-yourself books, generally categorized by subject, such as plumbing or cabinetmaking, are available, as are a growing number of do-it-yourself videos. Many community colleges offer continuing education classes in home repair and PBS continues to lead the way with a handful of regular home improvement-oriented programs.And there's always the time-honored method of trial and error."That's how I did it," said Beverly DeJulio. "It was out of necessity, the seek-and-find method. The school of hard knocks."But it paid off.Today DeJulio is known to the viewers of ABC's "Home Show" and to radio listeners in Chicago as Ms. Fix-It. She parlayed a growing competence with work around the home into a kind of status as an expert adviser.A dressmaker and dress designer by training, DeJulio grew up "in a home where we never had repair people come in. I had a very handy father, and mom would put in switches and light sockets and things like that. I grew up with the mentality that you did for yourself."Still, DeJulio didn't become truly skillful until circumstances forced her hand. On her first day of single parenthood, she said, the sump pump went out in her basement. "A lot of things went awry along the way," she said, but eventually, with persistence and advice from neighbors, the job got done."My 4-year-old son looked at me and said, 'Mommy, you fixed it.' It made me feel so good," DeJulio said. "It gave me a lot of self-confidence when my self-confidence and self-esteem were very low."She kept watching and learning. As a single parent on a more limited income, she said she had to "save up money for a long time to have a repair person come in when something went wrong." So, when they did come in, she observed and asked questions. And on one visit, a repair person recommended the "Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual" as a reference.As she watched, read and learned, DeJulio said she eventually got to the point where she did major repairs on appliances. "It all comes in steps and stages as you build up your confidence and your skill level," she added.Today she takes on such complex tasks as installing basement walls or drop ceilings."Where most of us learn," she said, "is by helping each other. You should never be ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help from friends or neighbors who may know about plumbing or electricity, for instance."But the acid test is actually getting down to the work with your own hands, which is how many current do-it-yourselfers gained confidence.Dave Cuneo, a bank manager who lives in Mission Viejo, said he "happened to have a talented father-in-law who kind of helped us get started. My wife grew up in an environment where her father did everything, like building kitchen cabinets from scratch. My wife is probably handier than I am. She does a lot of minor repairs, like patching walls and wallpapering and some repairing."Cuneo watched and learned. As part of "a lot of fixer-upper stuff," he has installed sprinkler systems and completely landscaped his family's last home."If you're not too paranoid to take a chance, there are a lot of materials available," he said. "I think the fun is not only doing the project, but looking at the finished results. When we landscaped our last home, somebody came by and asked us if we used a professional landscaper. It was a lot of drudgery, but that made it worthwhile."The type of projects do-it-yourselfers take on tend to fluctuate with the seasons, Pena said."In the spring, you'll see a lot of people in their yards, so they'll be buying a lot of trees and plants. Also, people are building a lot more decks than they used to. In the hotter months, we see a lot more people putting in their own sprinkler systems."All it takes, he said, "is a little courage to go out and try. People will start with something small and then they build up. They'll start with painting a room, for instance and then they'll say, 'Maybe I can wallpaper too.' So they do that. Then they say, 'If I can do that, maybe I can put in ceramic tile.' And they do."But for pure do-it-yourselfer inventiveness and pioneering, you'd have to go far to beat Bill Pickering. With no firsthand experience in concrete forming, masonry or electronics, Pickering turned his back yard patio into Wonder Spa.Pickering is a retired plumber, and therefore knows his stuff when it comes to moving water through pipes, but he was looking at a project that would involve tearing out a big concrete slab and replacing it with a highly decorative pile of masonry, tile and electronics--a task requiring skills in which he had not been trained."I knew the piping," he said, "but the rest I'd never done. But if you keep your eyes open, you learn a lot. I got books but I didn't pay much attention to them."He did, however, pay attention to professional contractors working at job sites. He would watch as frames were put into place, reinforced steel was installed and concrete was poured. He watched as electrical wiring went in. He produced drawings of his dream spa, made measurements, checked his budget.And plunged in.He broke up the existing 16.5 tons of concrete of the patio, hauled away 19 tons of dirt, built a wooden frame and supported it with 65 sticks of reinforced steel. He then brought in a cement truck and filled the form.The spa was faced and lined with Mexican tile and Pickering installed a Mexican marble fountain in the wall above the pool. The surrounding patio was surfaced with tile, but not before Pickering installed the piece de resistance , a series of copper tubes beneath the tiles through which hot water is pumped to provide radiant heat for cold bare feet.And, when the spa isn't occupied, Pickering can remove a plate from its bottom and quickly convert it to a three-tier fountain."I just went out and bought the tools and did it," he said.It all took three years of on-again, off-again work.And it cost about $9,000, a saving, Pickering estimated, of about $16,000.Pena said that it isn't unusual for a do-it-yourselfer to pay from 33% to 100% less to finance their projects than they would if they hired a professional."A lot of contractors buy from us," said Pena, "and the consumer finds that he can buy at the same price as the contractor and save that way. You have to put your own price on your own time, though."Part of that time is spent in learning. Videos are multiplying fast, said DeJulio, and they can be valuable visual aids, but unlike a book, they can't be kept handy at your elbow while you're working on the job. Also, she added, videos must condense information into an often fast-moving package. Review requires a fast finger on the rewind button.DeJulio's first reference is still her favorite: the "Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual." It is a thick, encyclopedic book, she said, that covers all areas of home projects.It may even be good for cocktail conversation. The apartment had good bones - high ceilings, original woodwork, abundant light.But when Alice Danino moved into her two-bedroom place, it felt empty and dull. Kitchen cabinets, walls and countertops were all white. There wasn't a hint of embellishment anywhere.So she put her creativity to work, making the place feel homey.She bought self-sticking silver decals in the shape of cutlery for the kitchen cabinets and quotations in calligraphy for the hallway walls. There are plants in every room now, and generous splashes of colour in the small appliances, dishes, sofa cushions and accessories that Danino and her current roommate, Vanessa Tobin, have brought home."I would love to have painted the walls purple, but then they would have had to be returned to the original white when we left," says Danino. "Instead, we found more temporary ways of bringing in personality."Rentals can be boring or dreary, with monotone cabinetry and floors and countertops that have seen better days. Usually, rentals are outfitted in neutral colours and surfaces chosen more for durability and mass appeal than beauty. Many landlords forbid anything but cosmetic changes. Besides, who wants to invest a lot of money in a place they don't own?But there are ways to make inexpensive, temporary improvements. We asked two interior designers, Nicola Marc and Anita Conidaris, for their suggestions when it comes to injecting warmth and character into a rented apartment. They find their inspiration in all kinds of places, from house and home magazines, museum gift shops, flea markets, decor boutiques and hardware stores to Winners and IKEA.-Anita Conidaris is a Montreal artist, decorator and garden designer. Her interiors are classic - a mix of textures and styles. Here are a few of her ideas:PAINTMost landlords insist tenants leave the walls as they found them, or repaint before leaving. Painting one accent wall in a living room or bedroom in a deep, bold colour adds instant drama, Conidaris says, and takes less effort to repaint than a whole room when it is time to move.MIX AND MATCHDon't worry about matching furniture. "I'm not into sets; they don't lend personality to a room," she says.Indeed, Conidaris says juxtaposing furniture in different styles adds personality. For example, pair a mid-century coffee table with a more traditional sofa. Or a reclaimed wood table in greyish tones with white-painted antique chairs for a clean, spare, slightly rustic, Scandinavian feel.She also likes the visual tension created when different textures are combined: Shiny with dull, silk with linen, raw wood with painted surfaces.LIGHTINGGood lighting doesn't just brighten a room; it also adds mood.Make sure to provide light from different sources, including table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling lamps. Even homes with well-lit rooms wired with recessed ceiling lights need to be layered with light from different heights.CREATE GROUPINGSTo avoid the appearance of clutter, group items as collections. For a pleasing composition, Conidaris recommends the triangle method in which taller, larger objects are placed in the centre of an arrangement, with shorter items around.THINK SMALLEven if you aren't allowed to repaint kitchen cabinets, they can be updated with replacement knobs and handles. Home Depot, for example, has a good selection of inexpensive hardware in a number of finishes.ART FOR ART'S SAKEArt doesn't have to be expensive or precious. Conidaris places individual sheets of Japanese printed paper in similar frames, black or white, then hangs them together on a wall for a vibrant arrangement. She'll frame and hang them in two or three rows of three. Or you can buy original art - instead of another Monet print - from up-andcoming artists.MIRRORINGGroup mirrors in different sizes and shapes above a bedroom dresser or on a hallway wall. Place the mirrors in antique frames (buy them second hand) or new ones. If the frames are different, unify them by sticking to wood or metal, for example, or a single colour. Or hang an oversized mirror in a small space to visually enlarge the space, and to bring more light into a dark area.GO WITH THE FLOWIn the use of colour, textures and choice of styles, make sure to maintain a certain flow through the space, especially in lofts or small apartments where one living area opens onto another. Keep colours neutral and add accessories in one or two complementary colours. For example, in an adjoining living room and dining room, toss a red cushion on the sofa, then add a red vase or table runner in the dining room.DON'T BE TOO SERIOUSA few disparate elements that are slightly off add notes of whimsy. Even in a traditional setting, go for a crazy lampshade or a piece of unusual art or a splash of unexpected colour.-Nicola Marc is a British-born Montreal stylist and interior designer with the firm Marc Gold Interiors. Fabric is a great way to bring colour and pattern into an otherwise neutral room. Curtains offer privacy, as well as protection from the heat and cold. They are also highly portable.In the kitchen area, Marc suggests hiding the washer or dryer behind a curtain of fabric. She strings the curtain panel along an elasticized cord hung from tiny eyelets in the cabinetry. (The resulting holes are easily filled before moving.)PAINT THE FURNITUREA great way to bring together odds and ends in disparate styles is to paint vintage or antique pieces. Marc's own dining room chairs, painted brown, are on their third colour.MOVABLE BACKSPLASHInstead of tiles, print out your own photographs and put them in brightly coloured frames to liven up the walls behind the kitchen counters.GO FOR WALLPAPERThat's pretty permanent, you might think. But Marc affixes hers to the wall with double-sided permanent tape, which she buys at the hardware store or at stationery supply stores. She jazzes up door panels and the backs of bookshelves and kitchen cabinets with all kinds of prints.Sometimes she'll stick wallpaper behind glass cabinet doors. If the kitchen cabinets are really ugly, she recommends removing the doors altogether and stashing them somewhere. Then line the back of the cupboards with patterned wallpaper and artfully arrange the dishes in the new-found display space.STICK TO NEUTRALSBig-ticket items like sofas and rugs last a long time and often cost. You'll want them to fit even if your colour preferences change or you move to another place. You can find sisal and jute rugs at IKEA for good prices, or all wool carpets at HomeSense.CREATE COLLECTIONSUse a group of clear glass jars filled with pasta, beans and legumes or grains in the kitchen, and ones filled with seashells and river rocks in the bathroom. "A collection can be anything you want it to be as long as there's something in common within each of the elements," Marc explains. "All wood, for example, or a grouping of glass vases and cake stands."VISIT THE MUSEUMMarc loves museum gift stores for prints, postcards and unusual items to frame or otherwise display. She often buys exhibition catalogues or calendars and pulls out the pages for framing, perhaps in vintage frames.LIGHT FIXTURESThe ceiling lamps and wall sconces in rentals can be pretty ugly, with their faux-bronze finish or frosted, patterned glass shades. Often, they haven't been replaced in ages. "An awful hanging lamp can really dominate a space," Marc says. "But you don't have to be stuck with it."Marc says it's often worth investing in new fixtures. (Just keep the originals to put back before you leave.) Home Depot is a great source for inexpensive wall sconces in glass, chrome or brushed nickel. So are Zone Maison and IKEA.AREA RUGSThey hide bad floors, but also serve to define a space. When it comes to revving up a home's curb appeal, house flippers, remodelers and stagers have the inside track. Rather than spend a fortune to make a home a standout in the current real estate market, go for the tricks professionals use that give the most bang for the renovation buck."Most houses have been lived in by families for years," says Raymond Derrien, a house flipper in Sea Cliff, N.Y. "When they go to sell, it's very dated." The solution is to remove elements of what's outmoded. It could be as simple as a fresh, neutral-toned paint job, changing the knobs on the kitchen cabinets, replacing a vanity top or getting rid of the curtains."People make a mistake when selling a house and they have all these heavy drapes," Derrien offers as an example. "That is not in the vernacular of today." Remodeling Magazine's "2011-12 Cost Vs. Value Report," a nationwide survey conducted with Realtor Magazine and, compared the estimated cost and the amount that can be recouped on 35 different remodeling jobs. The results showed that it's not necessarily the most extensive remodeling projects that provide many happy returns. A new front entry door, minor kitchen and bathroom remodels, creating an attic bedroom and replacing the garage door are among the low-budget yet high-yielding home improvement projects that may even make you want to stay put for a while.David Peterson, operations manager and project coordinator for in Portland, Ore., said that buyers are attracted to homes that are blemish-free, "Q-Tip clean" and move-in ready. "Busy, dated wallpaper can feel distracting and overwhelming to potential buyers," he says, an immediate turn-off. "Removing wallpaper, painting walls, changing light fixtures, adding hardware to cabinets, and de-cluttering" help update a house and make it "more appealing to potential buyers," he adds.For a kitchen remodel, replacing "that 1970s look" of laminate countertops by switching to quartz or granite may do the trick without the larger expense of changing kitchen cabinets. New stainless steel appliances also help. "You will collect that back in the end. It will make the price higher," says Vita Burdi, a kitchen and bath designer and an owner of DJ's Home Improvements in Valley Stream, N.Y. "Redo it enough that they'll say they can live with it for 10 years and then do it," Burdi says. "You won't have to cut your price and you haven't done a tremendously costly renovation." Otherwise, she says, buyers will complain that the kitchen needs a redo, and "shave $50,000 off their offer."There really is gold - and living space - in the attic. Instead of using it as a storage catch-all for luggage, old clothes or a discarded crib, converting attic space under the eaves into a stylish - and private - bedroom is one of the top and easiest ways to maximize living space. Here's what you can learn.NEW YORK (MONEY Magazine) - In the 1990s, Flippers were stock jockeys who finagled their way into initial public offerings, only to flip them days or hours later for big profits.These days the go-go market is homes, not stocks. In hot spots like Las Vegas and Florida, real estate flippers have discovered that a modest down payment and a little patience can net them tens (even hundreds) of thousands of dollars in profits, sometimes tax-free.The most aggressive of them figure that some combo of paint, new flooring and kitchen upgrades can turn the dumpy house they bought for $300,000 in February into a $400,000 property they can unload in July. And in the most sizzling markets, they're absolutely right.Ask Angel Cooley, 54, a retired judge who moved to Las Vegas three years ago and has since flipped eight houses. Even with the Vegas market cooling somewhat in recent months, Cooley expects her real-estate-related net worth to reach seven figures this year."A year ago you could buy something in Vegas for $200,000, and in less than four months you could gain $150,000," she marvels. "It was a crazy kind of hysteria here, like people running after a Brink's truck."Sound tempting? Absolutely. While quick-hit real estate investing is nothing new, the confluence of new tax breaks, low interest rates and exploding prices has created a perfect storm for flipping opportunities (at least in some markets) and has made legions of instant moguls.Problem is, the playing field is getting crowded. In Las Vegas, 7 percent of all homes sold last year had been owned for less than six months, according to DataQuick Information Systems. Nationally, 14 percent of all new mortgages these days are for second homes or investment properties, up from 8 percent in 1999, reports mortgage tracker Loan Performance.If you've been considering putting in your application for that real estate mogul position, statistics like these should give you pause. So should the example of veteran flippers like Jeff Bliven, who, after 20-plus years in the game, says he's dropping out."With some of these mortgage companies, if you can fog in a mirror they'll make you a loan," says the 42-year-old resident of Newtown, Conn. "When everyone's doing it, it's time to liquidate."Speculation makes markets riskier. That's what concerns David Berson, the chief economist at Fannie Mae. He's still bullish on home prices but worries that speculators may overinflate white-hot markets.Historically, home prices have declined very infrequently in the U.S., in part because typical homeowners don't treat their houses like stock investments. They don't sell in a panic just because their neighbor fetched only 90 percent of his asking price."But the nature of speculators," Berson notes, "is that they do pull out when prices stop going up."Even a small downturn could wipe you out. Vegas or Miami or San Diego real estate surely won't lose all of its value like an eToys, but the potential risks for investors are just as dire.A flipper who puts down $40,000 to buy a $400,000 home would lose the entire down payment should the market decline just 10 percent; throw in closing costs, 12 months of mortgage payments and a 6 percent realtor commission to sell, and the flipper could easily be out $80,000 on a $40,000 investment.Hard-core flipping is obviously not for everyone. If the market chills, you'll face the ignominy of making monthly mortgage payments on a property you can only sell at a loss. That said, the risks are mitigated when you live in your investment for at least two years. Not only are the potential tax benefits terrific, but your mortgage payments cover an all-important cost of living: shelter.So what's the best way to get started? MONEY sounded out two dozen experienced renovators and real estate investors around the country for suggestions. Here are the highlights.Flippers who do put down roots -- perhaps they're more aptly described as serial renovators than as flippers -- typically buy unattractive or underappreciated houses in good or up-and-coming areas. They live there while making key renovations and then sell after two years, all the while looking for their next two-year home improvement project.Why wait two years? Under current tax law, the first $250,000 of profit from a home sale is tax-free if the seller has lived in the house for at least two years. The tax break is even bigger for married couples: The first $500,000 in capital gains is tax-exempt."For the typical American, it's the best and most generous tax break in the entire tax code," says Douglas Duncan, chief economist for the Mortgage Bankers Association.Turning a profit may seem easy in a flippers' market, but getting from point A to point B can be a lot of work, particularly if the brand of investing you're used to is of the point-and-click variety. Scouting out properties, negotiating financing and final prices, and overseeing renovations can be a full-time job.In fact, real estate is as much a lifestyle choice as it is an investment strategy.Serial renovators Bob and Christine Miller of Phoenix, for instance, spend most of their free time working on their homes, doing everything from repainting walls to rummaging through junkyards for vintage doors and sinks. For 44-year-old Chris, home improvement is in the blood: Her dad was a weekend tool-belt warrior. But Bob, a 41-year-old baseball executive with the Arizona Diamondbacks, didn't know Bob Vila from Bob Uecker before he met Chris.Soon enough, though, he was tiling floors and installing cabinets like a pro. He says that fixing up a neighborhood eyesore is almost as rewarding as turning a big profit. "You have to enjoy doing the work. And we do."Even a world-class do-it-yourselfer with a keen eye for design can't turn a bad house in a bad school district (or a good house purchased for too much) into a winning flip. That's why most flippers focus their searches on ugly ducklings that can be turned into swans with a few cosmetic changes."I look for the house that the neighbors hate because it's not kept up," says Joyce Grimes Bone, 37, of Norcross, Ga., who has flipped 10 homes in four years.Her rehabs typically cost about $10,000 per house and are what she calls "cosmetic light," meaning carpets, roofs, paint and landscaping. The goal is to make $20,000 in profit per deal. For the math to work, she must buy 30 to 40 percent below a home's post-rehab market value.Bone takes a Peter Lynch-ian, buy-what-you-know approach. "My niche is suburbia," she explains. "If it's on the way to Costco, I've checked it out."Before bidding, she runs through a mental checklist: "Do the neighbors have pride of ownership? Are the schools good? How close is it to shopping and the highway?" It all boils down to whether she'd want to live there.The thing is, not every neighborhood has a "Boo" Radley house in dire need of a makeover. And if you're looking for bargains, real estate agents aren't likely to be much help because their job is to get top dollar for sellers, not steals for buyers.Bone, like many flippers, looks to the foreclosure and pre-foreclosure market to find motivated sellers willing to cut a deal. Locating these folks isn't easy (Bone goes so far as to post "We Buy Houses" fliers at the county courthouse), but the Internet does help.Check out foreclosure and pre-foreclosure Web sites such as for leads to investors looking for off-price real estate.Celestino Mastrangelo, 42, of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, has been investing in real estate for a decade. His first deal was a clunker. After making only cosmetic repairs, he and brother-in-law Dino Scalzo put the house back on the market, only to have it go unsold for months. The problem? Dingy kitchen cabinets and a prehistoric furnace turned off buyers."With our second house," he says, "we did everything: new kitchen cabinets, new furnace, hot-water tank, and we finished the basement." After putting $25,000 into the $80,000 house, they soon sold it for $155,000. "You have to spend money to make money," he says.Mastrangelo also learned to line up financing early. If you're selling one house to buy another, you'll probably need a bridge loan. For hard-core flippers hunting for quick scores, traditional mortgages may not do the trick.The best bargains come from people who need cash and are in a hurry to sell. That's why many flippers finance purchases either with personal savings or home-equity loans.Says Mastrangelo, "Sellers are motivated to sell to you when you don't have to qualify for a loan."The tricks of wise flippers can be applied to your home, even if you've no plans to sell. When they buy, they look for places that are underpriced because of cosmetic problems that most house hunters don't realize can be easily fixed.When they renovate, they choose styles, patterns and fixtures with broad appeal: no purple kitchens, no heart-shaped Jacuzzis.
