How to Find and Install Used Kitchen Cabinets

Remodeling your kitchen is one of the biggest decisions that any homeowner makes. Beyond being a very expensive decision with costs often in the tens of thousands of dollars, the kitchen is an important family space where many families come together. The most important and most expensive aspect of any kitchen remodel is the cabinetry. By finding and installing used kitchen cabinets, you can do the whole remodel on a much more affordable budget.

The first question you are likely to ask yourself then, is where do I find used kitchen cabinets for my home?

The best place to start is the Internet, namely craigslist.com. Craigslist is a great way to find local used items at great discounts. Savvy homeowners doing their own remodeling will often put their old kitchen cabinets up for sale on craigslist.com. If they have already removed them, all you have to do is negotiate a price and bring them back to your home. Many homeowners however will ask that you do the removal yourself. This can be a great cost saving measure for you and can be done by two people in one afternoon. Just be careful to preserve the cabinets when taking them out.

Another way to find used kitchen cabinets is by putting the word out with friends and family. Expanding your network will give you more opportunities to find people remodeling. If you have a personal connection with them, it's also very possible they will offer the cabinets to you for free or at a great discount. Once again, be willing to take the cabinets out yourself as that will save them the hassle of either doing it themselves or paying a contractor.

Two more options include contacting habitat for humanity and remodelers. Many Habitat for Humanity warehouses hold donation that you can use in your remodel so check your local area for them. Likewise, many remodelers will be willing to put your name down on a list. That way, next time they are going to have to tear out some cabinets, you can do the job for them and haul the cabinets away. It's a win-win.

Installation.

Once you have the cabinets, you will have to install them into your kitchen. Since most cabinets are specifically designed for the kitchen they are going into, you will have to get a little creative. Measure carefully and outline a blueprint for how you will get the cabinets into your kitchen.

The installation itself is probably best handed off to a handyman if you aren't very confident in your own abilities.

Install Kitchen Cabinets - Staying on the Level
You will want to check your four foot level for accuracy before you begin to install kitchen cabinets. By doing this, you will be sure of a quality and accurate installation. So, the best way to insure that your cabinet installation will be started off on the right foot, I suggest that you visit your local rental store and rent a laser level. You will be assured of the most accurate level line possible. You can set up the laser level in a matter of a few minutes, and once you have determined the high point of your kitchen floor, you can shoot the laser line at that height. This is when you can go around the corners of the walls and mark the level line locations. After you have done this step, you can take a chalk line and connect the dots. However, you will want to be sure of one thing here. Make sure that you stretch the chalk line as tight as you can get it. This will ensure that the line is not sagging in the center. Once you have snapped the chalk lines, you can go back with the laser level and double check the chalk lines. If you cannot rent a laser level or if it is not in your budget, then a four foot level will work just fine. However, you need to really pay attention to the bubble in your level and be very accurate with the drawing of your level lines around the walls of your kitchen. By measuring up thirty four and a half inches from the high point of the floor, you can start at that point and use the level to draw the lines. If at all possible, have someone else help you with holding the other end of the level while you level it up and draw the level lines along the walls. Once you have drawn the lines around the kitchen, take the level and flip it over end for end and go back around the level line and check to see that the level is accurate. If your four foot level is not accurate, this is where you will be able to tell. Only if the lines match up when you go back around the kitchen in reverse will the line be perfectly level. If the lines do not match up, your level is not accurate, and you will have to purchase a new one or have it recalibrated. By renting a laser level, you will not have to worry about your level not being accurate. It will save you some time at the beginning stages of the installation, but it will be the very best way to give you level lines to start with. Just remember that this step is like the foundation of a house. If it is not right here , the entire process will be compromised.

Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets
Outdoor kitchen cabinets are constructed using durable materials like stone, stainless steel, and redwood. This protects them from the harmful effects of seasonal weather and termites. They can be as simple as one cabinet next to a gas or charcoal grill, to a full set of cabinets complete with a sink and vent hood. Elaborate outdoor kitchens may include refrigerators, icemakers, and wine coolers. This is a great place to enjoy the weather with friends and family by the pool. Speakers and TV's located outside provide entertainment while cooking or hosting the party. If you are building a new home, wiring can be installed with a little planning, however if you want to add wiring to an existing home for outdoor media make sure it is hidden well.Outdoor kitchen countertops are made from tile, synthetic solid surface, granite, or other natural stones. A bar added to an outdoor kitchen lets the cook serve from the working side while guests can cozy up to the other side. The bar should be raised to 42" to allow guests to stand or sit on weatherproof barstools. There are several outdoor kitchen appliances to choose from. They are often made from stainless steel to ensure they won't rust or corrode. These include elaborate gas grills with burners, refrigerators, and full stainless steel cabinets with doors. The outdoor kitchen is a luxury and should be treated as such. It is a place for family and friends to enjoy each other's company while swimming in the pool or just entertaining a full house. This keeps the majority of them outside making clean up more enjoyable. Before you start building your outdoor kitchen, it is important to have your appliances on hand. Outdoor cabinets are designed around these items. Decide which material you will be using as well to speed up construction. Your local cabinetmaker will have many ideas for design, door styles, and location.

5 Ways to Save Money on Your Kitchen Cabinets
When I first started looking at kitchen cabinets I was amazed at how expensive these things really were. Even the cheap cabinets cost more than I expected. After I realized that the cheap cabinets were not much more than particle board, I decided it was either spend a lot of money or I needed to find some other options. The answer was not at your local super mega store, it was online. Here are 5 quick suggestions I put together after searching long and hard for new cabinets for my kitchen.1.Go online and look for kitchen cabinets. You can find the same cabinets you're your local store is offering, plus some custom manufacturers, RTA distributors, and you will able to get competitive prices. You will find that most of the cabinets are still expensive, but if you look for RTA cabinets, you are sure to find some good buys. If you don't know what an RTA cabinet is, it stands for Ready to Assemble. There is no need to worry, the ready to assemble literally means you will need a screw driver and that's it. All of the cabinets I bought came with one page of directions and I used my cordless drill, but it was not necessary, it was only to speed up the assembly.2.Be careful what sites you're going to online. Do some research before deciding to buy from one site versus the other. Many of the on-line sites are just retail stores buying from someone else. If you can, try to find the company that is importing the cabinets. There are a lot of cabinet sites out there, and some will try to confuse you by changing the name of the cabinet so that they can sell it as a higher end cabinet. Some will offer "free shipping". Don't believe it, it will be free shipping, but they will mark up the cabinets enough to make up for their shipping costs.3.Trust the quality of these cabinets. The good RTA sites import their cabinets from reliable sources that use all hardwood construction for the face frames and door, and they will use solid plywood for the sides. Most store cabinets consist of some part particleboard.4.Compare what you would spend at a super store; add in the inconvenience of driving to the store, and the price of gas. Now compare that to the convenience of having the cabinets delivered to your door. Yes there are shipping costs, but even after those costs, I still saved hundreds on the cabinets.5.Look at the options you have. When buying from a store, you will quickly find out that they carry very few of the cabinets. All others have to be "special ordered". With this special order comes a mark up for shipping and usually other charges as well. On the other hand, if you can find the RTA Cabinet sites that are importing their cabinets directly, they will carry all of the cabinets in stock. The importers can usually ship your cabinets in 3-5 days, not including transit times, so if you find a site that tells you 3-4 weeks they are probably just re-selling the cabinets. So go online and look up an RTA kitchen cabinet site. Be careful of the mark ups on some of these sites and don't be afraid to ask questions. Prices vary and some costs are hidden, but in the end you will save a good amount of money.

How to Remove Formica From Kitchen Cabinets
Formica is a pressed laminate found in many kitchens and bathrooms. It is a durable surface material, resistant to scratching and heat. Over time, you may decide to replace the Formica for a fresh, new color, or you may decide that you want to change your kitchen for a completely different look. Removing the Formica laminate from kitchen cabinets is an easy process that is labor intensive. The care you take in removing the Formica will depend on whether you plan on re-using it elsewhere. If the laminate will be scrapped, then you don't need to worry about it coming off in parts.Use a screwdriver to remove all hardware from the cabinets from which Formica will be removed. Take all doors off the cabinets so you can work with them on a stable tabletop.Put on safety goggles and rubber gloves. As you pull laminate away from the cabinet, it can snap and break into pieces. Goggles will protect your eyes. Rubber gloves protect your hands from exposure to the solvent, which can burn your skin. Lacquer thinner is a commonly used solvent.Paint a layer of solvent along the seam of the Formica. Turn the heat gun on low and position it at the seam to loosen the Formica.Insert the putty knife into the seam, working your way under the Formica and pulling it away from the underlying base. Work in one movement, avoiding wiggling the putty knife back and forth. This may scratch the underlying surface, which will create more work for you later in refinishing it.Continue to apply solvent and heat along the area you are working on to dissolve glue and reduce the amount of work you need to perform.

Best 30-Inch-Wide Refrigerators
Consumer Reports has no financial relationship with advertisers on this site.If you're in the market for a new 30-inch-wide refrigerator, you may find that your options are limited. That's because refrigerators these days are typically 36 inches wide to fit into common kitchen cabinet configurations. To help you zero in on a great addition to your kitchen, we've assembled a list of CR's top picks from our refrigerator ratings that are 30 inches wide. There's one design caveat to keep in mind, though. "With the exception of built-in refrigerators, you're unlikely to find a 30-inch-wide fridge that'scounter-depth," says Joseph Pacella, Consumer Reports' refrigerator test engineer. "You'll need to be okay with a fridge that sticks out from your kitchen cabinets." Fridges that are 30 inches wide tend to be at least 30 inches deep.As for performance, in CR's refrigerator lab we wire the models we test with thermocouples and monitor them for more than a month in a climate-controlled chamber. We collect more than 5.4 million temperature readings for each model to detect warm and cold spots, which we call temperature uniformity, and determine which refrigerators keep food fresh longer. We also measure usable storage capacity, noise, and how long food will stay frozenduring a blackout. In addition, our member survey-with input on more than 65,000 refrigerators owned by CR members-gives us data we use to calculate a brand's predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. To find out more about the more than 300 models we rate, go to CR'srefrigerator ratings.CR members can read on for our ratings and reviews of the eight best 30-inch refrigerators from our rankings. The list includes a top pick and a runner-up in each configuration-top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, and built-in-from brands such as Blomberg, Frigidaire, Kenmore, LG, and Thermador. (CR hasn't tested any 30-inch side-by-side refrigerators.) Buying Kitchen Cabinets on a Budget
There are a lot of choices to be made when you decide to remodel your kitchen cabinets. How much do you want to spend? What kind of wood do you want, and how do you want it finished? What types of special features would you like to add? Should you choose custom built, ready to install, unfinished, or ready to assemble? You know you'll be spending a lot of money, so you want to make sure you do the project right. If you're on a tight budget, it will make the job just that much more difficult. How can you get the type of modern style you're looking for without breaking the bank? One of the things you can do when you set out looking for cabinets on a budget is to check different resources in your community. Your first impulse is probably to go to some type of showroom that displays all the beautiful cabinetry you can't afford. You'll only feel discouraged when your price range takes you away from the picture perfect kitchens to the boxed, ready made cabinets several rows down. If you aim to high too start with, you're only going to end up being discouraged. There are other ways to get beautiful, quality kitchen cabinets into your home if you know where to look.Check out any salvage yards you can find in your area. You'll find that wealthy people often change their kitchen cabinets just because they want to and that they trade in expensive, high-end cabinets that have nothing wrong with them. Even if you have to do some refinishing, you can still end up with gorgeous cabinets for very little money. Refinishing cabinets before they're hanging on the walls is relatively easy. Use a palm sander to remove all the finish you can and then do some hand sanding around the edges. If the cabinet design is intricate, you may need some chemical refinisher in order to get into all the designs.Another place where you can find finished cabinets for low prices are lumber liquidators. They often carry discontinued lines of cabinetry, and you can pick up a whole kitchen's worth of new cabinets for a fraction of the cost of a home improvement store. These stores don't always have a large variety to choose from at any one time, but if you can find a style you like, it's money in the bank.

5 Creative Storage Hacks for Small Spaces
In a perfect world, every house would have a basement and an attic, walk-in closets and deep kitchen cabinets that stretch on forever -- but the world is an imperfect place. Some otherwise-great dwellings have narrow closets, a couple of small cabinets and no attic or basement. If you're handy -- or at least, comfortable with a hammer and nails -- that may not matter. There are plenty of ways to make more storage space, even in the tiniest of houses.Walls that are out of the way or too small to hang pictures and knickknacks -- like the narrow wall beside your bathroom sink -- often go unused. Instead, hang a few simple floating shelves within arm's reach. Reduce clutter by using the shelves to store items you'd normally keep on the countertop. When you're trying to store infrequently-used items, think above eye level. Stack wicker baskets along the top of your kitchen cabinets to store small appliances you don't use often. Install a pot rack from the ceiling to store the pots and pans you don't use every day. Suspend a clothing rack from the ceiling to store out-of-season items and free up closet space. With a few supplies and some creative thinking, you can easily double the shelving space in your bathroom and kitchen. Place tiered shelving units along your widest shelves to break the large space into smaller, more usable chunks. Attach narrow baskets to the inside of cabinet doors for more storage space.Replace pantry or laundry room doors with reclaimed wooden shutters, available at hardware resale stores and charity shops. Not only will the wooden shutters look great, you can use the other side to hang items -- like kitchen utensils or knickknacks -- out of sight. If you don't want to swap out your doors, you can also install pre-built shelving units. Many are designed to fit along the inside of doors and will give you plenty of added storage space.Utilizing the space under your cabinets could free up some room inside of them. By hanging a rack underneath, you could store wineglasses and coffee mugs under the cabinet using less space than you would have needed on the shelves. You can also use the space to install a magnet to hold up metal jars or spice containers.
